Rural poor have few job prospects

In poor rural areas, the will to work is plentiful, but job prospects are poor. Most rural poor subsist as small-scale farmers.

Solution: Train them to grow high-value crops

A UN initiative in Bosnia sought to find employment for the poorest families in rural areas. They found a virus-free, commercial variety of raspberries suitable for the area, and planted and trained local residents to grow the berries. In addition, program directors secured a buyer for the raspberries.
